I may know of a way to get the requests for joining open...

a little help to let people submit
Go to ''Admin Area'' ,manage members,then at the right will appear 8 options,you click on members,and there will appear all member,at the right it say ''On home members'' if the join request are closed yo click in there and choose are automatically approved or subject to vote,then you go down where it say ''on gallery,members'' click in ''show all folders'' and you do the same that you do with join requests

Also in that area you can find the way to allow the people to join. I think It's the first page that pops up and you put, "automatically allow" for every thing
